For black people, experience holds a dear school, and the knowledge they acquire is based largely on the experience of living while black in a society that is dominated by non-black people. While American society is often ideologically characterized as privileging equal opportunity, the everyday reality of the masses of black people is that of being peculiarly subordinate in almost every way, but this is especially true when they venture into essentially white spaces. So, ask yourself why should people of color be treated differently? We self-question our self because of what other people think of our race. We are looked at as murderers, dangerous criminals, muggers and much more. Imagine living life every day in fear knowing that everywhere you go, everything you do is being observed and judged by people. Imagine walking to a convenience store or a clothing store and having someone watch your every movement thinking youre going to steal an item. Imagine being mocked and disliked at your school because your different from other people. No one likes to be left out, but then why do we judge? Why do you pass the torch of unforgiving world? Why do you set a fire of hatred? Why do we discriminate? Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there is always somebody different from you. Many of us focus on differences and not on similarities of other people. Racial discrimination is everywhere. In general, its a belief that a certain race or ethnicity is inferior or superior to others. Racial discrimination involves ethnic origin, religion or belief. The first major point I have is that all people are created equal. In all holy books, it is mentioned that all people are created equal, so who are we to judge? The belief that everyone is created equally seems to not resist anymore. Thats why I am here before you to make you understand that discrimination against African Americans is an immoral act. Discrimination is experienced across a range and it may occur in a way by excluding people socially or by being indifferent to their views and experiences. It may take the form of stereotyping and prejudice of different types of groups in our community; in name calling, taunting or insults; or in actively and directly excluding or discriminating against people from services on opportunities. In its most serious appearance, racial discrimination is demonstrated in behaviors and activities that embody hate, abuse and violence- particularly experienced by groups who are visibly different because of their cultural or religious dress, their skin color or their physical appearance. For centuries, the issue of racial discrimination has been haunting millions of people wide world. Almost everywhere you turn; you see some form of discrimination. Research shows that its effect is greater on people that care about doing well. They also must be put into a situation where their skills or abilities might be in question, either in school, at work, or in public places. Being discriminated can change someones world. Emotional trauma and mental health effects from discrimination and stereotyping result in the most significant harm to an individual. There are other damages, such as loss of job or promotional opportunities, loss pay for days not worked, and damage to reputation. The people that discriminate or stereotype usually choose victims on whom to take out their frustration and anger. They choose those who are seen weaker or inferior to themselves. An important figure of color once quoted, There is not a liberal America and conservative America- there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and a Latino America and Asian America- theres the United States. Blood Brothers Superstition Essay Over the past term, me and my fellow classmates have studied the play Blood Brothers by Willy Russell. The hit West-End show follows the story of two twins, separated at birth and brought up in two very different social backgrounds; one growing up in a rich family, while the other remains with his real mother in a poor family, living in the slums of Liverpool. The play explores many themes, ranging from the problems of society, to the possibility of superstition playing a massive part on life. After we watched Blood Brothers, we acted out certain scenes from the script and attempted to use various techniques to portray the story in many different ways. Blood Brothers tells the tale of Mickey and Eddie, two twins separated at birth due to a number of reasons. The first act introduces the story, and examines the events leading up to the birth. It also witnesses their first meetings as children. This part of the play is very comedic, however the frequent use of the narrator (who plays a paramount role throughout the play) quickly shifts what appears to be a funny scene into a dark and eerie one. It also investigates whether superstition plays a role on life, with the narrator constantly supporting this idea. Mickey, is one of the brothers who still lives with his real mother, while Eddie grows up in a more upper-class background. The pair are very friendly to each other to start with, and their friendship grows, but then collapses towards the end. Mrs Johnstone is the real mother who was left by her husband a few years before. Mrs Lyons is the woman who Eddie is brought up to know as Mother, who like Mickey suffers a mental breakdown. These two, unlike their sons despise each other a little way into the plot. When we read the script, the very first scene we performed was opening of the play in Act One. This scene studies the events leading up to the birth of the twins, and how Mrs Johnstone could be convinced to give up one of her sons. The main reason for her seemingly cruel decision was to still be able to look after her family financially. She claims that had she only one child, she could provide enough food for everyone, however with any more it was impossible. To make this scene interesting, we used a range of different techniques. We did this by attempting Liverpudlean accents, doing different gestures, and moving in unique ways that we believed the characters would in real life. In this scene, I played the milkman and gynaecologist. The milkman had a very stereotypical Liverpudlean voice, and a slightly lazy posture to illustrate his boredom of delivering milk day in and day out. The gynaecologist however, was quite the opposite. He was well-spoken, and took a rather positive view on life. His movements were quick and small. The milkman, like Mrs Johnstone was fed up with life, and was feeling the hardships of life more than others. The doctor was happier, partly because of his social status. The small choice of changing some attributes contributed to showing how much class played a part on life. Another technique we used was props. We had to bring in an object that would help portray the character. I brought in an empty glass bottle that helped show the characters profession. This scene was important to the play as it laid out the path for the story to continue. One of the other groups performed the scene where Eddie becomes very angry with his mother for not allowing him to play with Mickey. They used still image to mark a specific moment. This made the scene memorable, and that point stand out. In the second act, we performed the scene where Mickey argues with Linda over why he needs his pills. The scene is very depressing, and shows how hard Mickeys life is. I played Mickey, and once again used role-play. His movements were a lot slower than in the first act, and he was much quieter. However a technique that I felt made the scene more interesting was mime. As another part of the scene was going on, I acted out silently in the background Mickey at work, trying to stop the urge to take his anti-depressants. We utilised staging, an explorative strategy to make the scene more interesting for the viewer, while still understandable. As the scene went on, we also dimmed the lights to show Mickeys mental state getting more and more disturbed and unpredictable, this is an example of an element of drama we used. Americans are a diverse bunch, and theyre growing increasingly polarized and seemingly more unable by the minute to talk politics in a civilized manner. Usually, a fight breaks out when the topic turns to the upcoming election. Here are five ideas for how to talk politics and still stay friends with your partisan pals. Cite Facts, Not Opinions If you absolutely must talk politics, one way to avoid messy confrontations is to steer clear of opinions and instead cite facts. Dont say, for example, that you think all Republicans are insensitive or all Democrats are elitists. Steer clear of painting everyone with such a broad brush. If you find yourself engaged in political debate while trying to enjoy the Thanksgiving turkey, use facts to gently back up your position. This will require some preparation and study the night before a get-together, but a policy discussion that centers on facts and not opinion tends to be one that is more thoughtful and less likely to end in a brawl. Gittes finds out that Mulwray was killed when he knew that the new water tank would be used to irrigate newly bought properties. Gittes unravels a murder drama, which looks to be linked to the water reservoirs in San Fernando Valley. The conspiracy that Gittes unravels does not fit a real noir crime film because there is the absence of high-speed loot, no gems, and jewels.
